In Diablo 4, the strongest starting layout for a gold-focused Season 16 PTR run is Scent of Gold's monster-gold-and-gem branch paired with three War Plans reward points on Gold. While regular farming remains the default, some players use D4 Gold before funding a target purchase, then track only the extra income earned by each route. This setup keeps the wallet goal separate from material farming and makes route comparisons easier to read.
Scent of Gold Gives the First Wallet Decision
Open the Character interface and review Tyrael's Boons before changing any activity route. Scent of Gold has one direction for monster gold and gem drops, while another favors Horadric Cube materials and Gem Fragments. The monster-gold branch is the direct choice for spendable currency; the materials branch fits a later crafting project.
Tyrael's Boons allows up to 132 points across four paths. Curious Addition supports the Purveyor of Curiosities, Merchant of Mystery supports Forgotten Soul cache purchases on Torment, and Trash for Treasure supports transmute discounts and salvage. Those paths can help gear or crafting, but they do not solve a wallet target as directly as Scent of Gold.
Set War Plans for Gold Rewards
Open War Plans, then Tactics. Activity nodes occupy the upper section, while reward nodes occupy the lower section. Each node accepts up to three points, so the first comparison layout should place all three reward points into Gold and leave the other reward categories at zero.
Open the Character interface.
Select War Plans, then Tactics.
Place three points in the Gold reward node.
Place activity points in the content the character clears without long pauses.
Confirm the selected activity and reward nodes remain visible before starting the route.
Helltides, Nightmare Dungeons, and related follow-ons can appear through activity choices. At least one point in Helltides or Nightmare Dungeons opens Greater Helltides or Escalation Dungeons as a follow-on choice. A fast pack-clearing build that stalls on bosses should stay with the activity line it completes cleanly.
Do not judge Greater Helltides or Escalation Dungeons from a single combat segment. Count travel, deaths, recovery, inventory sorting, selling, cache opening, and plan turn-in time. The fastest-looking activity can lose once those costs enter the clock.
Marks and Boons Refund Costs Are Separate
Marks of Wisdom pay for changes to War Plans Tactics and individual Activity trees. Completed War Plans provide Marks, and the announced PTR holding cap is 20 Marks. Read the refund tooltip on the exact node before confirming a change, since the cap does not prove that every reset has the same cost.
Tyrael's Boons follows a separate gold refund rule. Unassigning one Boons point costs 5,000,000 gold under the written PTR details. Four points cost 20,000,000 gold, five cost 25,000,000 gold, ten cost 50,000,000 gold, and twenty cost 100,000,000 gold.
Boons points removed Gold cost Break-even requirement
1 5,000,000 Earn 5,000,000 extra
5 25,000,000 Earn 25,000,000 extra
10 50,000,000 Earn 50,000,000 extra
20 100,000,000 Earn 100,000,000 extra
Keep Scent of Gold fixed while comparing War Plans activity lines. Refund Boons points only when the expected improvement can repay the bill during the period that allocation will remain active. A different unfinished value has appeared in development material, so the confirmation dialog in the PTR client takes priority over any earlier figure.
Track Net Gold Per Hour Without Polluting the Result
Set a clear target first, such as a vendor purchase, temper, masterwork attempt, or known fee. Record starting gold and remaining Marks, complete one full route without changing trees, then record the ending wallet. Net gold per hour equals ending gold minus starting gold, multiplied by 60, divided by total elapsed minutes.
Take separate readings before and after the final War Plans reward. This shows whether most income came from monster drops, completion payouts, or both. Keep sell and salvage rules identical between runs, and either count an unusual vendor sale every time or exclude it every time.
Mrak can grant gold, War Plans boosts, and a Boons max-out option for allocation checks. Treat those grants as setup assistance rather than normal earning speed, and begin the timed measurement after recording the wallet created by any grant.
For the next run, keep the monster-gold Scent of Gold branch, three Gold reward points, and the fastest reliable activity line. Fund the target before changing the tree, then compare the final wallet against the same route with cheap d4 gear only after the gold measurement is complete.
